Eyam and The Great Plague

Marshall Howe

Despite catching the plague, Marshall Howe managed to recover and survive. Marshall realised that he could not catch the disease again and so decided to earn money by becoming a grave digger in the village of Eyam. Sure enough, despite handling many infected bodies, Marshall did not catch the plague again and survived. As well as earning money from burying the bodies, Marshall gained extra goods and money by stealing from the bodies of the dead. This led to heartbreak for Marshall though, as his wife and children died from the plague, possibly from the infected goods that Marshall kept.
